Tendulkar, Raina and Munaf celebrate after win. |
Touted in the build-up as a battle between the visitors’ bowling weaponry and India’s batting power, it was instead Pakistan’s frail middle-order which succumbed to the home side’s attack, falling to 231 all out after Wahab Riaz’s five-wicket haul had limited India to 260 for nine.
Man-of-the-match Sachin Tendulkar was dropped four times before top-scoring for India who booked themselves a date with Sri Lanka in Saturday’s World Cup final in Mumbai.
After winning the toss MS Dhoni’s side looked set for 300-plus on a pitch with an average first-innings score of 253, but Riaz struck regular blows for Pakistan with the home team’s middle order once again failing to make the most of a solid platform.
Tendulkar compiled a chance-laden 85 to set up the Indian innings, having been put down four times and survived both an lbw and stumping review in the 11th over of the innings. Although he didn’t go on to register his 100th century in international cricket in the highly-charged clash, his reprieves ultimately proved crucial to the final result.

Shoaib Akhtar and Sachin Tendulkar look-alikes. |
He and Virender Sehwag got off to their traditionally brisk start at the top of the innings, with Sehwag butchering 21 from an Umar Gul over as India galloped to 55 without loss inside six overs.
Although Sehwag was then trapped lbw by Riaz for 38 from just 25 balls, Gautam Gambhir put on a 68-run partnership with Tendulkar to keep Pakistan on the back foot.
Gambhir was out stumped off the bowling of Mohammad Hafeez for 27, before Riaz returned to change the course of the innings as he removed Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh with consecutive deliveries as India wobbled on 141 for four.

Captain MS Dhoni survived the hat-trick ball and then stabilised the innings with an authoritative 25, but it was Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 36 which held the lower order together in the dying stages of the innings.
Riaz, who extracted prodigious swing in each of his spells, was easily the pick of the Pakistani bowlers with his 5 for 46 in 10 overs, while Gul had a day to forget with his eight overs costing 69 runs.
Saeed Ajmal meanwhile claimed a tidy 2 for 44 in his 10-over allotment with Pakistan’s decision to leave out Shoaib Akhtar well justified.
In response Pakistan made a positive start to their run-chase with Kamran Akmal(19) looking promising before driving Zaheer Khan straight to point.

Fellow opener Mohammad Hafeez (43) was well set when he played a forgettable scoop shot, edging through to Dhoni, and Asad Shafiq’s 30-run resistance came to an end when his stumps were re-arranged by Yuvraj.
At 103 for three the game was still a contest with the onus lying very much with Pakistan’s middle order. Younis Khan (13), however, was unable to deliver, as he chipped straight to Suresh Raina to put his side under even more pressure.

The precocious talent of Umar Akmal briefly lifted Pakistan’s hopes with two sixes and a four, but when he was bowled by Harbhajan for 29, the writing was on the wall. The dangerous pair of Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi were both unable to make an impact down the order and Misbah-ul-Haq was left fighting a lone battle with just the tail-enders for company.
The 36-year old fired his labourious innings to life with five fours and a six taking him to 56, but with the task of 30-runs required off the final over Misbah became the last man out as Pakistan were bowled out with just ball left of the full 50-overs.
While the Pakistani batsmen were victims of their own poor shot selection, the Indian attack to their credit were disciplined and completed an allround display with each bowler on show claiming two wickets. Ashish Nehra, who returned to the side in place of Ravichandran Ashwin, was the pick with 2 for 33 with Dhoni requiring just five bowling options. The home side were equally impressive in the field and now head to Mumbai for the World Cup final on Saturday.

| 5.5 141.5 kph, Taufel has given Sehwag out and he's asked for a review against the lbw decision immediately. He didn't even check with Tendulkar. Brilliant decision from Taufel. That ball pitched just in line with leg stump, short of a length, and skidded on to Sehwag, beating the batsman's attempted flick off the back foot. That ball didn't bounce as much as Sehwag thought it would. He was on his toes playing the shot. The only doubt was whether it pitched in line, it did. Pakistan are ecstatic. 48/1

'If you want the job done right, then do it yourself,' he's thinking. Possibly. Relief flows visibly over the Pakistanis as they gather at the fall of the wicket. Plenty of smiles out there now 187/5

| 18.5 90.3 kph, Lovely stuff from Hafeez! Beaten in flight and stumped! Gambhir went down the track but couldn't reach the pitch of the ball. Panic. He then tried to stab the ball away but is now beaten by the turn. More panic. The ball has gone past him and he looks back, trying to get back but no luck. Kamran whips off the bails. India two down. 116/2

| 25.2 139.4 kph, Pakistan have taken a catch! Wahab strikes again! Caught at backward point. It landed on a length around off and angled away, Virat played a strange shot as if he was surprised by how it seamed away - Wahab hardly gets the ball to bend in - and had a weak waft at it. He just stabbed at it. Edge and pouched! 141/3

| 25.3 146.2 kph, Crashing full swinging delivery! Sensational moment! Wahab, who was kept in this game instead of Shoaib, has done the job. What a little big moment. Pakistan huddle is on. It was full, it was pacy and it swung in beautifully past the hurried stab and crashed into the stumps. Clatter! It didn't land at all. He just took the pitch out of the equation 141/4

| 41.4 143.7 kph, well, that's one way to take the faulty catching out of the equation! Dhoni is rapped on the pad as he shuffles to off, huge appeal and Taufel has given him out! Dhoni wants a review though ... but it's not going to help, three reds as it pitches and hits him in line, definitely hitting the stumps and that's gone. India's hopes of making a defendable total are beginning to evaporate here 205/6
