Franco and Shreve each won Simpsons merchandise along with a cash prize of $10,500 (£6,600). They beat the previous record - set in 2010 by three fans who watched continuous episodes of Kiefer Sutherland series 24 - by 31 minutes.

Twentieth Century Fox, which broadcasts the show in America, hosted the marathon. The event was attended by the show's creator Matt Groening and several cast members including Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith.

The Simpsons, which was created by Matt Groening, is the longest-running animated comedy show of all time. The US TV series will broadcast its 500th episode - At Long Last Leave - in the US later this month.
