21.5 inches tall Chandra Bahadur Dangi is world’s shortest man (Photo)

A 72-year-old man from a remote valley in southwestern Nepal was on Sunday declared the shortest man ever documented after being measured by Guinness World Records officials.

Chandra Bahadur Dangi stands just 54.6 centimetres (21.5 inches) tall, measurements confirmed, 5.3cm shorter than Filipino Junrey Balawing, the previous holder of the "world's shortest man" title.

"I'm continually amazed that this record keeps getting broken," Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said in a statement after the adjudication in the Nepali capital Kathmandu. "Just when you think it's impossible for the record to get any smaller, Mr Dangi comes along and astonishes us all. "What I find equally remarkable is his age -- if he really is 72, he is by far the oldest person to be awarded the shortest-man record in Guinness World Record's 57-year history," Glenday added.

Dangi has also been declared the shortest human adult ever documented, taking the accolade from India's Gul Mohammed, who was measured at 57cm before he died in 1997 aged 40. Dangi, who weighs 12 kilogrammes (26.5 pounds), was brought to the attention of the world only three weeks ago after Nepali researchers looking into the history of the Dangi people were introduced to him.

He told AFP in his first interview with Western media earlier this month that recognition at the end of his life would be some compensation for years of hardship. The pensioner, who was orphaned at 12, says relatives used to display him at freak shows to make money for themselves and that he has never experienced romance or found his soulmate.

"Until now, Chandra's stature has been a burden; he is acutely aware of the difficulties of fitting into an average-sized world and is disappointed at having missed out on the chance to find a wife," Guinness World Records said on Sunday. "He is hopeful, though, that his new title will see a change in his fortunes."

The cause of his stunted growth remains a mystery although many holders of the "world's shortest man" crown have suffered from primordial dwarfism. Dangi earns a sparse living weaving jute headbands and has only ever left his village in poverty-stricken Dang district, 350 kilometres (220 miles) from Kathmandu, a handful of times.

Guinness World Records quoted Dangi, who visited Kathmandu for the first time to be measured, as saying he was too old for marriage but would still like to travel. "I want to visit foreign countries and meet people from around the world," Dangi said.

Another Nepali, Khagendra Thapa Magar, claimed the title in 2010 after being measured at 67 cm. Magar's stint as the world's shortest man saw him travel to more than a dozen countries and make television appearances in Europe and the United States. He was also the official face of Nepal's tourism campaign, which featured him as the smallest man in a country that is home to the world's highest peak, Mount Everest.

Striking Images: Ants making a journey across a water

This set of striking images show the difficulties faced by a group tiny ants who are making a journey across a small stretch of water.  The river reflects their bright orange bodies in a stunning mirror image as they make their way from one stone to another.

In one photo the first pioneering ant stretches out almost his entire body length to reach the other side. Another shot shows one rescuing his friend from a watery grave.  A third shot shows an ant as he appears to be peacefully taking a drink from the river.

Photo: The three ants after making it to the other side
Image: Stretch! An ant reaches out for the other side
Picture: An ant helps his friend across
Image: One of the ants stops to take a drink water.

Photographer Vincentius Ferdinand, 39, captured these amazing pictures the insects in Kepulauan Riau, Indonesia, in December.  'These pictures were taken near to where I live,' he said.  'I have always been interested in ants because I find their behaviour so fascinating.

The way they can all work together to produce a force for the good of the colony is inspiring.  'I started photographing them back in 2009. I enjoy macro photography and these snaps are among my favourite because the colours are so interesting. 'I think the orange of ant looks stunning against the grey and green background.

'I also like the way the picture is reflected in the water below. I think this certainly adds a different dimension and I always find that I feel more tranquil when I look at the images. Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth.

The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves.

14 year Moshe Kai Cavalin about to graduate from UCLA

UCLA student Moshe Kai Cavalin is about to graduate from UCLA and while thousands of students reach their goal of graduation each year most of them are not just 14-years-old.

Most of those students also didn’t enroll at East Los Angeles Community College when they were just 8-years-old at which point they maintained a 4.0 GPA while earning two degrees, the first of which was obtained in just one year.

Cavalin spoke with the Assoicated Press where he said:
“People need to know you don’t really need to be a genius. You just have to work hard and you can accomplish anything.”
Moshe Kai Cavalin at Graduate Ceremony
I can attest that you don’t have to be a genius to graduate from college, many of my fellow college peers could barely spell their own names. On the other hand even an 8-year-old non-genius who works really hard probably won’t pass the math, English and other classes needed for an extremely early college graduation.

In the meantime Cavalin has already published an English edition called We Can Do, a 100-page instructional book that encourages young people to achieve amazing feats through total commitment and diligence.

In his Chinese edition of the book he philosophically writes:
“I was able to reach the stars, but others can reach the Milky Way.”

Although he's a big fan of Jackie Chan movies, Moshe says he limits his television time to four hours a week. Not that he lacks for recreational activities or feels that his parents pressured him into studying constantly.

Moshe Kai Cavalin "We Can Do" Book.
He writes in 'We Can Do' of learning to scuba dive, and he loves soccer and martial arts.  He used to participate in the latter sport when he was younger, winning trophies for his age group, until his UCLA studies and his writing made things a little too hectic.

Indeed one of the key messages of his book is to stay focused and to not take on any endeavor half-heartedly.  'I was able to reach the stars, but others can reach the "Milky Way,"' he tells readers.  It was a professor at his first institution of higher learning, East Los Angeles City College, who inspired him, Moshe says.

He didn't like the subject but managed to get an A in it anyway, by applying himself and seeing how enthusiastic his teacher, Richard Avila, was about the subject.

Mr Avila, he says, inspired him to write a book explaining his methods for success so he could motivate others.  It took four years to finish, in part because Moshe, whose mother is Chinese, decided to publish it in Mandarin, and doing the translation himself was laborious.

Han Shian Culture Publishing of Taiwan put the book in print, and it did well in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, as well as in several bookstores in Southern California's Asian communities.  He then brought it out in English for the U.S. market.

Because of his heavy study load, Moshe has had little opportunity to promote the book, other than a signing at UCLA, where he also lives in student housing with his parents and attends the school on a scholarship.

After earning his bachelor's degree, the math major plans to enroll in graduate school with hopes of eventually earning a degree.  After that, he's not so sure. He points out that he's still just barely a teenager.

lavish life of Kim Dotcom Megaupload founder (with Photos)

Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom's online profile was larger-than-life, with fast women, faster cars and chartered planes, yet he lived like a virtual recluse in a sprawling, manicured estate on the outskirts of New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland.

Dotcom, also known as Kim Schmitz, faces extradition to the US over charges of masterminding a scheme that made more than US$175 million (S$221 million) by infringing copyrighted content without authorisation on his online file-sharing website.

Neighbours sometimes saw Dotcom on the winding roads in one of his luxury cars, but no one Reuters spoke to had actually met the multi-millionaire, former hacker.

Dotcom, 38, rents what is reportedly New Zealand's most expensive house, built by the founders of Chrisco Christmas hamper fame and worth an estimated NZ$30 million (S$30 million), with a monthly rental put at NZ$30,000-NZ$40,000.

At the nearby Coatseville general store, garage, cafe and gift shop, everyone told the same story - no one has actually met Dotcom, who reportedly stands two metres tall and weighs more than 130 kg.

Nor has anyone met his wife, who is heavily pregnant with twins, or his three children or know where they go to school.

Sachin Tendulkar's ODI Unbeaten 200 off 147 Balls Highlights Video

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar (सचिन रमेश तेंडुलकर; born 24 Apri 1973) created history by firing the first double century in one-day internationals as India put South Africa to the sword in Gwalior. The 36-year-old was in indomitable form as he bludgeoned 25 fours and three sixes in a stunning 200 off 147 balls.

It passed the previous best of 194, set by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar in 1997 and Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry last year. And it led India, aided by a fabulous cameo of 68 off 35 balls from Mahendra Dhoni, to a superb 401-3 from 50 overs.

Tendulkar, whose previous best one-day knock was the 186 not out he scored against New Zealand in 1999, is already the leading run-scorer in Test and ODI cricket.

But to have reached such a landmark, with a single in the final over, only serves to underline his class and add to the legacy that already surrounds arguably the finest batsman to have played the game.

His innings was typified by wristy strokes, trademark boundary shots and, above all, stamina as he batted through the entire innings.

He passed the previous best score in ODIs off 140 deliveries before taking his time over the final six runs, completing his double century with a single off Charl Langeveldt four balls from the end of the innings.

Despite clearly suffering with cramp towards the end, Tendulkar was not to be denied and the packed Gwalior crowd were in raptures as he brought up the record.

About Norman Rockwell and his best paintings

Norman Percevel Rockwell (February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978) was a 20th-century American painter and illustrator. His works enjoy a broad popular appeal in the United States, where Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios he created for The Saturday Evening Post magazine over more than four decades. Among the best-known of Rockwell's works are the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter (although his Rosie was reproduced less than others of the day), Saying Grace (1951), and the Four Freedoms series.

He was also famous for his works in the Boy Scouts of America publication and for his iconographic advertisements for companies including Coca-Cola, Ford Motor Company and Sun-Maid Raisins.

He painted portraits for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, as well as other foreign presidents and movie stars of his day.

His art made him a bit of a celebrity and twice he judged the Miss America Beauty Pageant. He also endorsed products including after-shave, tombstones and wine.

He tried to enlist in the U.S Navy during the First World War but was refused entry because he was eight pounds underweight, at 6 feet tall and 140 pounds.

During the Second World War in 1943, Norman painted the Four Freedoms series, which he completed in seven months and resulted in him losing 15 pounds. The series was inspired by a Franklin D Roosevelt speech in which he described four principles for universal rights: Freedom from Want, Freedom of Speech, Freedom to Worship, and Freedom from Fear.

In 1943 a fire in Norman’s studio destroyed numerous original paintings, costumes, and props. He was commissioned to illustrate over 40 books including Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

If you visit Google.com today, you will see a special doodle, with a boy and a girl sitting on a bench together. The painting was one of Norman Rockwell’s most famous, which was on the front cover of the Saturday Evening Post on April 24, 1926. It was known as the “Little Spooners.”
