Queen Rania of Jordan receives FIFA Presidential Award
The commitment shown by Queen Rania of Jordan to the 1GOAL: Education for All initiative saw her conferred the prestigious FIFA Presidential Award at the 2009 FIFA World Player Gala on 21 December.

The 1GOAL campaign, whose simple yet laudable objective is to turn the concept of universal education into a reality, was launched in August 2009 at Wembley Stadium in London, with the support of FIFA and the Global Campaign for Education, and in the presence of its co-chair, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah.

“Today, in numerous countries around the globe, too many young children find themselves sentenced to a life of poverty and desperation through no fault of their own. If we can take these children off the streets and get them into schools, we have a chance to turn this situation around, providing new hope to these families, communities and countries as we move forward. By investing in the education of the next generation, we can create a more developed, equitable society,” said Queen Rania, a longtime advocate of a child’s basic right to education.

Motivated by a personal conviction that education remains the best method of directly improving the lives of underprivileged children, the Queen of Jordan – who was named UNICEF Eminent Advocate for Children in 2007 – has played an active part in the 1GOAL campaign, encouraging politicians, musicians, footballers and fans of football across the world to commit themselves to this worthy cause.

“We have a long way to go, with lots of hurdles to overcome, but I hope that many more people will join us in our journey towards a world in which all children can realise their dreams of getting a proper education,” Her Majesty said.

The 1GOAL team aim to capitalise on the enormous popularity of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ to attract millions of signatures of support in their battle to provide access to education by 2015 to the 75 million children around the world currently not receiving schooling of any kind.

The 1GOAL: Education for All campaign represents a starting point for governments, the private sector, and society as a whole to offer solid commitments of support, while remaining true to the values of universal equality as well as the values of football, a sport which is often described as the ‘school of life.'
