day 1 - Sri Lanka 1st innings 293/4 (TT Samaraweera 65*, AD Mathews 26*, 86.5 over)

The India legend, 37, is making his 169th appearance, passing the record of former Australia captain Steve Waugh.

After winning the toss and batting, Sri Lanka's middle order guided them to 293-4 at the close in Colombo.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with a fine 75, while Thilan Samaraweera was 65 not out at stumps.

Tendulkar holds numerous records in addition to his new mark for Test caps, including most Test centuries (48) and most Test runs (13,742).

He scored his fifth Test double century in the second Test, which was drawn, and with India having lost the first Test of the three-match series they need to win at the P Sara Oval to level the contest.

The wicket both seamed and spun on Wednesday but some solid batting from the hosts had put them in a sound position when bad light brought an early end to play shortly before the scheduled close.

India picked up a wicket in the fourth over as Ishant Sharma took advantage of movement early in the day to have Tharanga Paranavitana caught behind for eight.

India then struck in the final over before lunch when Murali Vijay produced a sharp piece of fielding at silly point to run out Tillakaratne Dilshan for 41.

Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara, dropped by Suresh Raina in the slips on 23, looked set for his third hundred of the series.

He produced some forceful strokes and had collected five fours and two sixes when he lifted a ball from left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha straight to Virender Sehwag at long-on to perish for 75 before tea.

Mahela Jayawardene was lbw to Pragyan Ojha for a subdued 56 in the evening session but Samaraweera was unbeaten on 65 at the close, with Angelo Mathews on 26, as the hosts built a solid foundation.
