Lindsay Lohan hosted Saturday Night Live in an attempt to kick-start her career comeback, but her turn as host garnered mixed reviews from viewers and critics.

Lohan's once-promising career spiraled into a descent of drugs and alcohol, jail time and stints in rehab. She is currently on probation for taking a $2,500 gold necklace from a California jewellery store.

The New York Post said she stumbled through her lines on Saturday night even when she was clearly reading them off of cue cards. She started off the show by joking about her struggles in her monologue.

"Everybody here believes in you. We wouldn't have you back otherwise," cast member Kristen Wiig said as she hugged Lohan, which then turned into a pat-down.

When Lohan asked if she was being searched, Wild replied, "No, I'm a lesbian now."

"Been there, done that," Lohan quipped, in reference to her romance with Samantha Ronson.

The Wall Street Journal, which reminded readers that "Lohan, when she's on her game, is fully capable of delivering a solid comic performance," said she had few standout moments in the episode.

The Journal singled out a parody of the Real Housewives reality TV franchise featuring Disney princesses as one of the "couple (of) skits worth watching."

Lohan had extended invitations to celebrity pals to join her on Saturday Night Live, according to TMZ.

Mad Men star John Hamm and former SNL cast member Jimmy Fallon took her up on her offer and made appearances.

Their cameos prompted author and TV personality Toure to tweet, "Lindsay Lohan hasn't made me laugh yet. Can we still replace her with Jon Hamm?"

Singer Josh Groban strongly criticized the episode, tweeting, "East coasters, what's happening on #SNL? Should I keep practicing and working hard at what I do, or is that not necessary anymore?"

Sources close to Lohan told TMZ that she was proud of her hosting gig. Some last-minute changes were made to the episode - such as the dropping of a musical monologue in favour of Hamm's and Fallon's cameos - but the sources said Lohan felt she did the best she could do.

Despite the critical pans, Lohan's SNL scored the second-highest ratings of the show's current season.

In a press release, NBC said the episode was No.1 for Saturday night shows among viewers aged 18-49. Full Nielsen ratings figures are due out Tuesday.
