Day 2 South Africa v India 2nd Test Match Report
An unbeaten partnership of just 36 runs between VVS Laxman and Cheteshwar Pujara was enough to ensure that the second Test heads into its third day with both sides eyeing a possible victory.
After Virender Sehwag (32) and Murali Vijay (nine) had got the Indian innings off to a steady start, four quick wickets saw the visitors tumble into trouble not for the first time, with Lonwabo Tsotsobe the chief destroyer with two wickets.
It's near impossible to wrap up the day's proceedings in a neat little package; there was simply too much action for that. The game ebbed and flowed in a manner rarely seen, with both teams having a least one period of superiority that was later unceremoniously reversed.
Having wrapped up the Indian innings in the first 45 minutes of the morning session, with Dale Steyn claiming a well deserved six-for, the home side appeared utterly dominant. However, Zaheer Khan soon inspired the first swing of the tide.
Returning from injury, the left-armer showed just what India had been missing at Centurion by removing the Proteas opening pairing of Graeme Smith (nine) and Alviro Petersen (24). Khan (three for 36) bowled with great accuracy and was able to extract movement from the pitch in a manner that his new ball partner, the supremely erratic Shantha Sreesanth, good only dream of.
A further two wickets before lunch saw the home side head into the interval at 74 for four, but with Hashim Amla and Ashwell Prince at the crease matters were far from dire - or at least they weren't until Harbhajan Singh entered the fray.
In an amazing spell of bowling, the spin wizard accounted for Amla and ripped the lower order apart to end with figures of four for 10. But Harbhajan was indebted to his fielders for two of the wickets, with Pujara taking a sharp chance at short-leg and Rahul Dravid pocketing an absolute blinder at first slip. Harbhajan himself chipped in with a good catch at fine-leg to give Ishant Sharma his only wicket.
As the players headed to tea, with the visitors holding a precious first innings lead of it was most certainly advantage India, but there was still much drama to be had with both openers as well as experienced king pins Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar falling before the close.
