Day 4 South Africa v India 2nd Test Match Report
India defied the odds to claim just their second victory on South African soil when they beat South Africa by 87 runs at Kingsmead.
Having been thoroughly out played during the first Test at Centurion, few gave the Indians much hope of bouncing back in such a fashion, but MS Dhoni's men proved that they can compete on bouncy wickets by securing victory in an entertaining Test match.
The game ebbed and flowed throughout the four days, but heading into day four requiring seven wickets for victory, the visitors had the edge on their opponents.
When Shantha Sreesanth made the key breakthrough for India just inside the first half an hour, producing a stunner of a delivery to dismiss Jacques Kallis (16), the momentum swung even further in India's favour. The fast bowler extracted some vicious bounce off a good length which Kallis could only fend off the glove, with the ball looping to Virender Sehwag at gully.
What followed left a slightly sour taste in the mouth, with AB de Villiers (33) and Mark Boucher (1) both on the receiving end of poor umpiring decisions.
De Villiers was the first to go, adjudged lbw by umpire Asad Rauf off the bowling of Harbhajan. Pushing forward, the South African got a good stride in before he was rapped on the pads. It looked a good shout at first glance, but replays showed it would have travelled over the stumps by some distance.
It was umpire Steve Davis who unfairly sent Boucher packing, with Zaheer angling the ball across the right-hander, the South African was hit on the back pad outside the off stump with the ball set to travel even further away from the wickets.
India's insistence on not using the Umpire Decision Review System has paid dividends, but in truth MS Dhoni's men were good value for their victory despite the umpiring errors.
Partnerships of 27 and 33 between Ashwell Prince (39 not out) and first Paul Harris (7) and then Morne Morkel (20) gave the Proteas a glimmer of hope, but when Harris was dismissed at the start of the afternoon session and Morkel fell after finding a few boundaries, the writing was on the wall.
Indeed, last man in Lonwabo Tsotsobe didn't last long, run out for a duck courtesy of some sharp work from Cheteshwar Pujara at short leg.
The result leaves the series evenly poised as the sides head to Cape Town for the third and final Test, which begins on Sunday.
Shot of the day
Ishant Sharma bowled a lot of short stuff on day four and while Paul Harris preferred to let them pass him by, Ashwell Prince was not so forgiving. Standing a touch out of his crease Prince latched onto the short ball in a second, hammering it to the midwicket fence with aplomb.
Delivery of the day
Not only was the delivery that dismissed Jacques Kallis crucial in the context of the match, but it was an absolute cracker. Sreesanth was fired up yesterday, and he continued in the same vein on day four. Opening the bowling with Harbhajan where perhaps in the past Zaheer Khan would have led the line, the fast bowler produced a delivery on a fair length that zipped up to shoulder height where a surprised Kallis could only fend the ball to gully.
Defining moment of the day:
The first session was always going to be crucial, and when Kallis was dismissed early AB de Villiers became the key man for the Proteas. The middle order batsman didn't last too long though, sent packing by an awful umpiring decision. Mark Boucher soon suffered the same fate and from there it was all but over for the home side.
