Day 4 South Africa v India 3rd Test Match Report
The fortunes continued to ebb and flow on the penultimate day, but South Africa will be confident about their chances of winning the match and series after Kallis' 40th Test ton. His latest milestone moved him past Australian captain Ricky Ponting on the list of most Test centuries. It also means India need 340 for victory.
The all-rounder's unbeaten 109, his second ton of the match, and 55 from Mark Boucher put the Proteas back on track after they had earlier wobbled on 130 for six.
Harbhajan Singh caused the early damage and had remarkable figures of 5-0-10-4 four overs into the day after he added the wickets of Alviro Petersen (22) and Hashim Amla (two) to the two he picked up late on day three. Petersen went back into his crease and was out lbw while, deflections off the pad and bat were the reasons for Amla's downfall.
Zaheer Khan added to South Africa's woes when he got rid of AB de Villiers for 13 after a nick off the underedge of the bat crashed into the right-hander's stumps. Ashwell Prince (22) then gave his wicket away when he cut a wide one from Ishant Sharma straight to point.
The dismissal of Prince gave India the edge and they looked like they would finish the innings off sooner rather than later, but Kallis and Boucher stood firm. Although Kallis found it difficult to score runs immediately after the break due to his reductor injury, Boucher took some of the pressure off by putting the poor balls away. They shared a game-changing 103-run seventh-wicket partnership.
Boucher, under pressure coming into the innings, notched up his 34th Test half-century as the hosts eased out of danger. His stay at the crease was ended when a Sachin Tendulkar delivery kept low and trapped him lbw dead front.
Dale Steyn then entertained the crowd with a 48-ball 32 to push South Africa to a stronger position. He became Harbhajan's fifth victim when an inside edge went onto his pad and popped to short-leg.
Kallis and Morne Morkel (28) made sure South Africa reached the psychological 300-run mark and beyond. Morkel and Lonwabo Tstosobe (eight) both holed out to long-on to give Harbhajan figures of seven for 120.
South Africa will feel they are favourites to win the game, but India will counter by saying they still have the Virender Sehwag factor.
Shot of the Day
An injured Kallis driving Sharma down the ground in the 65th over to go to his 55th Test half-century takes the honours. It was slow going for Kallis in the afternoon session, but he went to his latest milestone with a lovely push past the stumps that beat the diving Tendulkar at mid-on. It was also Kallis' first boundary since the 22nd over.
Delivery of the Day
There weren't too many good balls in the day. Most of the dismissals were down to poor shot selection or misfortune. However, Zaheer did go past the edge a couple of times in the morning. He bowled a beauty to Kallis in the 33rd over from wide of the crease. It nipped away after pitching and then beat the right-hander's outside edge.
Defining Moment of the Day
There's no stopping Kallis at the moment. He came to South Africa's rescue in the first innings with 161, most of that came while batting with the tail. However, his 40th Test knock was even better as he was in much better company for most of his knock.
