A 183-run partnership between Shane Watson and Brad Haddin carried Australia the bulk of the way to a convincing seven-wicket win over Canada in Wednesday’s World Cup Group A clash in Bangalore.

Collectively calm against the Canucks’ frontline seamers before tucking into the substandard spinners, Watson and Haddin finished with 94 and 88 respectively as the minnows chased leather around the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

With six sixes and 20 fours between them, there was seemingly no stopping the half-centurion duo until impatience robbed both of them of centuries.

While wicketkeeper-batsman Haddin was snappled down the leg-side in the wake of an impatient waft, Man of the Match Watson perished on the ropes due to one big hit too many.

Captain Ricky Ponting didn’t stick around for long, skewing a simple catch through the off-side to continue his poor run of form, and Michael Clarke (16 not out) and Cameron White (four not out) were left to finalise the inevitable with all of 15.1 overs to spare.

Earlier pace ace Brett Lee’s four-wicket haul resigned Canada to a mere 211 all out in 45.4 overs in Wednesday’s World Cup Group A clash in Bangalore.

Hiral Patel’s whirlwind knock of 54 at the top of the Canadian knock was soon laid to waste by an inept display from the middle order, which relied heavily on the collective stubbornness of captain Ashish Bagai (39) and sidekick Zubin Surkari (34) to stave off a sub-170 score.

The twosome added 68 for the third wicket before Shaun Tait’s brace paved the way for Lee (four for 46) to mop up the tail. Spinner Jason Krejza chipped in with two scalps.

The win takes the Aussies to the top of Group A’s standings, with tournament sign-offs Canadians resigned to yet another loss in their entirely forgettable World Cup campaign.
