ICC World Cup 2011, 29th Match, Group A: Australia v Kenya Played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore 13th March 2011 (D/N) full Highlights Video, Match Report and Scorecard.
Australia v Kenya Cricket WC Match Report
Having won the toss and deciding to bat first, Australia posted 324 for six in their allotted 50 overs with Brad Haddin, Michael Clarke and fresh-from-injury Michael Hussey being the stars of the show.
Shane Watson was the first to depart after going after a wider ball from Nehimiah Odhiambo and a thick edge went through to Maurice Ouma who took a regulation catch.
Ricky Ponting then stepped out to join Brad Haddin in the middle and the two added a second wicket partnership of 89 before the Australian wicketkeeper was sent packing for 65. Haddin picked one up from outside off and lofted it straight to Patel on the fence as Jimmy Kamande bagged his first scalp.
The Australian skipper continued his dry spell in the World Cup and soon followed Haddin back to the dressing room as he was trapped leg-before by Collins Obuya.
Clarke and Michael Hussey, however, knuckled down and put on a stellar partnership of 114 to help steady the ship for Australia. Clarke’s 93 off just 80 balls included seven fours and one six at a strike rate of 116.25.
Once Hussey departed, Steve Smith and Clarke added a further 47 for the sixth wicket partnership before Clarke was sent on his way after playing a rash shot which went straight to Rakep Patel at long-on.
The Kenyan batsmen faced a mammoth task and their confidence would have been low after having been bowled out for 69 against New Zealand, 112 against Pakistan, 142 against Sri Lanka and 198 against Canada.
Brett Lee struck in his second over to send Ouma on his way for four and Shaun Tait soon backed up his fellow pace ace as he sent Alex Obanda back to the dressing room for 14. A batting collapse seemed to loom after David Obuya was run out by his brother. D Obuya nudged the ball towards midwicket and set off for the run but Collins stood his ground at the other end and sent David back, despite the fact that he’d already come about three-quarters of the way down the pitch.
Tanmay Mishra and Collins Obuya then knuckled down and added 115 for the fourth wicket to give Kenya some hope. Mishra contributed 72 which included eight fours and one six before being run out by Clarke who did well to fire a direct hit at the stumps and send the batsman on his way.
Collins stuck around for a little while longer as Australia’s bowling continued to disappoint and the Kenyans plodded along to 247 before losing their fifth wicket. Odoyo tried to go for a wild swing, but missed completely and Tait disrupted the stumps.
C Odoya looked set for a century, but it wasn’t to be and the top scorer of the match ended on 98 not out as Kenya succumbed to a 60-run loss.
Australia might have won the match but their bowling will give them plenty to ponder while Kenya will take some confidence for their performance as they notched up second highest score against any Test-playing side, after the 265/5 versus India in Gwalior 1998.
