Barclays Premier League: Liverpool Vs Wigan Athletic Match Report
Liverpool twice came from behind against Wigan to take all three points and join Chelsea at the top of the table after a five-goal thriller at Anfield.

Two first-half strikes from Egypt forward Amr Zaki and one from Dirk Kuyt took the sides in at the break with the Latics deservedly one goal to the good, but a much improved second 45 minutes from the Reds and a Wigan sending-off changed the match.

Late goals from Albert Riera and Kuyt once again stopped the visitors from claiming their first-ever Premier League win at Anfield.

Outplaying the home side for most of the first half, Steve Bruce felt his side should have taken the lead on 22 minutes when a defence-splitting pass from Wilson Palacios left the Liverpool backline statuesque and found Olivier Kapo inside the six-yard box.

With only Pepe Reina to beat Kapo's low drive saw the Reds shot-stopper pull off a good save down to his right and recover quickly enough to clear the ball off the toe of the striker.

With no Fernando Torres for the Reds, goalscoring duties had been left to Robbie Keane, who had a chance to make his mark on the game after 27 minutes when a through ball from Riera left three Wigan defenders scrambling back to catch Keane, who unchallenged managed to curl the ball past Latics keeper Chris Kirkland but past the far post as well.

The breakthrough came just a minute later when a short pass from Reina to his centre-back Daniel Agger just outside the box was miscontrolled by the defender, inviting a challenge by the quick-thinking Amr Zaki, who stole the ball and slotted in his seventh of the season to give his side a well-deserved lead.

Against the run of play the home side found an equaliser on 36 minutes when a surging run from Agger deep inside his own half went unchallenged and, making up for his mistake which gifted Wigan the opener, the centre-half played a neat one-two with Riera and cut the ball back to an unmarked Kuyt, who levelled the scores.

Having got back into the game the Reds started to create a few more chances and a 30-yard thunderbolt from Kuyt was heading into the top corner before Kirkland got his fingertips to the ball and touched it onto the bar.

The visitors reclaimed the lead during added time before the break when a defensive mix up once again involving Agger and Andrea Dossena let Antonio Valencia cross the ball to Zaki on the edge of the six-yard box and he spectacularly volleyed in a right-foot rocket.

After the break the home side looked a different team and the Latics were almost pinned back on their 18-yard line from the off.

Latics keeper Kirkland looked determined to hold on to the lead and a good save from a Kuyt shot from six yards was a sign of things to come and further efforts from Steven Gerrard and Riera had the keeper stretched but looking well up to the task.

The turning point came with 20 minutes to go when referee Mr Wiley showed Valencia a yellow card after he was adjudged to have charged down a Liverpool free-kick before the ball was played.

The player was shown a second yellow four minutes later and ordered from the pitch after his challenge on Xabi Alonso was deemed reckless due to the fact he left the playing surface despite winning the ball.

Taking advantage of the extra man Liverpool found another gear and drew level for the second time with ten minutes left to play.

A one-two between Riera and substitute Nabil El Zhar found the tallwinger striding to meet the ball and his low shot found a path through a crowded area and into the back of the net.

Having all the momentum Liverpool were throwing everything they had at Wigan who had every player behind the ball, but all three points were claimed on 85 minutes after good work from Jermaine Pennant on the right managed to pick out a cross to Kuyt.

The Dutch forward acrobatically volleyed the ball into the ground and over a stranded Kirkland who couldn't get a firm enough hand to the ball to keep it out.
