The 2011 Australian Open is a men's and women's tennis tournament taking place in Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia, from 17 January to 30 January. It is the 99th edition of the Australian Open and the first Grand Slam event of the year. The tournament is being played on hard courts and is organised by the International Tennis Federation and Tennis Australia. The Australian Open is part of the 2011 ATP World Tour and the 2011 WTA Tour, who both award the winner of each competition two thousand ranking points.
Roger Federer and Serena Williams are the men's and women's defending singles champions, respectively. Williams announced her withdrawal from the event in late 2010, due to rehabilitation for an ongoing foot injury.
