Canada v New Zealand Cricket WC Match Report
Despite a classy innings of 84 off 87 from captain Ashish Bagai, the North Americans were never a threat to New Zealand, focusing rather on not being utterly embarrassed than making an effort to chase down a mammoth target of 358.
The toss seemed an important one to win with conditions clearly favouring swing bowling. Bagai called correctly and stuck New Zealand in, no doubt hoping that the Henry Osinde, destroyer of Kenya, could get the ball to move about as he did against the African team.
As it turned out, he could, but getting the ball to swing and picking up wickets against a team that includes batsmen like Brendon McCullum, Jesse Ryder and Martin Guptill are two significantly different propositions. While Guptill struggled for fluency, eventually falling to Harvir Baidwan, McCullum looked without a care in the world, thrashing his way to a flawless 101 off 109 balls.
As he did so famously against Pakistan earlier this week, Ross Taylor waited for the batting powerplay before unleashing his trademark blasts over midwicket - the source of the majority of his 74 runs. He was particularly brutal in one Baidwan over, smacking the unfortunate seamer for four sixes and a four .
Scott Styris and James Franklin took the New Zealand score to unreachable proportions with some spectacular late-order hitting, the latter being especially aggressive in the final over of the match, smacking three sixes and two fours off Rizwan Cheema.
The Canadian innings got off to the kind of start one would expect in this kind of mismatch; losing two quick wickets to the swing of Kyle Mills. There was some unfortunate relief for the North Americans though, as Kyle Mills hobbled off after 2.4 overs with what seemed to be a minor knee injury. Youngster Hiral Patel made a brisk 31, including a number of exceptional strikes over extra cover off James Franklin.
Bagai came to the wicket with two wickets down and, despite looking somewhat out of touch for his first dozen or so deliveries, he soon settled and was, in fairness, the only Canadian who looked likely to create a problem for the Black Cap bowlers.
He was ably assisted by Jimmy Hansra, who made a somewhat scratchy 50 off 83 balls and never seemed focused on chasing a result. He and his captain put on 125 runs before an outside edge from Nathan McCullum’s bowling put an end to Bagai’s innings. Hansra departed soon after, retired hurt from excessive cramping – only to return later for another burst – but his efforts were for naught, with the Black Caps easing home.
