England v West Indies Cricket World Cup Match Report
Chasing a modest 244 runs for victory, the Windies got off to a flier thanks to a characteristically blitzkrieg knock from Chris Gayle, who bludgeoned 43 runs from just 21 balls.

The introduction of Man of the Match James Tredwell (four for 48) as early as the seventh over stemmed the tide, with the spinner accounting for the wicket of Gayle, Devon Smith and Darren Bravo in relatively quick succession.

What Gayle had started, the middle-order failed to cash in on and it was left to Darren Sammy to pick up the pieces. Having promoted himself up the order, the Windies captain cranked a brisk 41 despite the regular fall of wickets around him. His departure at 113 for four had the English in with a sniff, though, and a few cheap wickets from part-time seamer Ravi Bopara (two for 22) had his side well and truly back in the hunt.

Bopara’s little skidders got rid of Sammy and Devon Thomas and the men from the Caribbean were soon looking to Ramnaresh Sarwan and Kieron Pollard for a rescue mission.

The duo obliged, to a degree, but with Pollard lacking temperament for the long haul and Sarwan slowly but surely digging himself into a defensive hole, England kept nagging away at their opposition’s waning cause.

Andre Russell’s cameo 49 off 46 balls down the order showed the likes of Bravo and Smith where they had gone wrong, but the return of Tredwell and Graeme Swann’s double strike in his final over of the humdinger left far too much for the tail-enders to complete.

Sulieman Benn promptly ran himself out to hand Strauss and company their World Cup lifeline.

Having tied with India and lost to Bangladesh and Ireland, England are left to hang on in hope that Bangladesh upstage South Africa so as to facilitate the English’s undue graduation to the tournament’s final eight teams.

Earlier a mixed performance with the bat saw England post 243 all out.

England celebrate a narrow win.
Coasting along on 121 for two, England looked set to reach a score closer to 300 before a middle-order wobble saw them lose four wickets for 30 runs, before Luke Wright (44) and Tim Bresnan (20 not out) dug them out of trouble.

It was a strange innings all round, because the West Indies will also know that while they bowled well for the most part, there were some shocking moments that rather let England off the hook.

Russell perhaps epitomised their effort as he took four for 49 in eight overs, mixing up splendid in-swinging deliveries with rank wides down the leg-side.

He was guilty of feeding Jonathan Trott plenty of deliveries on his legs early on, allowing the usually pedestrian batsman to play an unusually brisk innings of 47 from 38 balls.

He was eventually undone by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, who took three for 34 on debut as he gave the ball air and extracted turn from a dry, wearing wicket.

That helped the West Indies rein England in from a well-set position after Andrew Strauss (31) and Matt Prior (21) had given England a solid start while the ball came onto the bat.
