India v Australia Cricket World Cup Match Report
Ponting answered his critics with a brave century driving Australia to 260 for 6, but fifties from Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir kept India in the hunt before Yuvraj Singh - with 57 not out - combined with Suresh Raina to see the home side to victory with 14 deliveries to spare.

Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina celebrate India's win.
Yuvraj was once again the hero, winning his fourth man-of-the-match award of the tournament for a superb half-century under immense pressure as he and Raina put on a stand of 74 unbeaten runs to bat their side out of a trouble after a middle-order wobble had earlier silenced the Sardar Patel Stadium.

The result means that India book their spot in a dream semi-final showdown with Pakistan next week while Australia return home without the trophy that has been in their possession for the past 12 years.

At the start of the day it was Ponting who won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat first on a track that provided turn from the start of the innings with Ravichandran Ashwin handed the new ball by skipper MS Dhoni.

Ashwin retained his starting place with the home side making just one change as Virender Sehwag’s return from injury saw Yusuf Pathan surprisingly left out and Raina maintained in the middle order. Australia meanwhile beefed up their batting line-up with David Hussey brought in for Steven Smith.

Brad Haddin and Shane Watson set the Aussies off to a solid start before Watson was the first to go, bowled by Ashwin as he attempted an expansive sweep. Haddin (53) and Ponting then added the highest partnership of the innings, sharing 70 runs before the Aussie wicketkeeper became the first of Yuvraj’s (2 for 44) two victims.

An uncharacteristically rash stroke from Michael Clarke (8) saw the Aussie vice-captain fall to the slow left-armer soon afterwards, before Zaheer Khan (2 for 53) produced a telling second spell - with the old ball - to see the back of Mike Hussey (3) and Cameron White (12).

Ponting meanwhile stood firm throughout and with a steely determination collected seven fours and a six on his way to his first ODI hundred in more than 13 months. His celebration at the milestone was muted, but there was a clear sense of satisfied defiance in his eyes after having been written off by many critics this week.

The Australian skipper fell soon after going to three figures, caught off the bowling of Ashwin (2 for 52), which left David Hussey to finish off the innings with a cameo of 38 unbeaten runs off 26 balls as the Aussies reached 260 for six.

India’s response was positive in the face of some wayward bowling from Brett Lee and Shaun Tait up front before Shane Watson entered the attack to remove Sehwag with a bouncer skied to square leg.

Yuvraj Singh is ecstatic after hitting the winning runs
The heartbeat of the home side’s innings was Sachin Tendulkar (53) who first went passed Kumar Sangakkara to become the tournament’s top run-getter, then passed 18 000 ODI runs, and then reached his 94th one-day half-century. The Little Master appeared to be on course to match Ponting with three figures before Tait returned to the attack to have Tendulkar caught behind by Haddin, sending a ripple of doubt through the the whole of India.

A composed half-century from Gautam Gambhir however kept the chase together despite Virat Kohli (24) throwing his wicket away off a Dave Hussey full toss, but then the innings started to wobble when Gambhir was run out for 50 after a miscommunication between himself and Yuvraj - the third calling blunder between the two in as many balls. The home side’s trouble then got worse when Dhoni fell to Lee for 7 and at 187 for five India still had plenty of work to do.

Two overs worth 27-runs however - from Tait and Lee - then set India immediately back on track and the local fans into delirium, with Yuvraj passing fifty for the fifth time in the tournament and Raina (34 not out) vindicating his selection as India strode to victory in the 48th over.
