Ireland v South Africa Cricket World Cup Match Report
Needing to beat South Africa and the Netherlands in their last two games and see Bangladesh and England lose their closing encounters in order to seal a passage to the play-offs, the Irish were always in for a tough time.

Having won the toss and put South Africa in to bat, William Porterfield’s men showed they would not be going down without a fight, with Hashim Amla (18), Graeme Smith (7) and Jacques Kallis (19) all dismissed before 100 was on the board.

Amla fell to a great catch at third man by Geroge Dockrell off the bowling of Boyd Rankin while Smith and Kallis were both the victims of poor running. While Smith was sold down the river by his partner, Morne van Wyk, Kallis once again illustrated his susceptible to the run out when he was punished for being too casual when taking a single.

Van Wyk looked much more comfortable up the order and his knock of 42 off 41 will have partially silenced the doubters who chastised him for a few shaky lower order knocks. However, the right-hander will be disappointed to have once again been dismissed looking to cut a delivery that was too close to his body.

JP Duminy took responsibility for rebuilding the innings, and at 117 for five he was joined by Colin Ingram, the later making his World Cup debut. While Duminy was more circumspect at first, Ingram found the boundary with greater regularity, looking comfortable at the crease throughout.

Ingram fell just short of his half-century but his job had largely been done, have effectively propelled the Proteas to a platform from which an imposing total could be built.

Duminy – with some help from Johan Botha (21) – did just that, with Duminy shifting into attack mode with ease, hitting some lovely boundaries. The left-hander eventually fell on 99, looking to blast the ball out the ground in the final over in an attempt to secure maximum runs for his team rather than selfishly looking for the single he required to reach the milestone.

The Irish spin dup of Dockrell and Paul Stirling were again impressive, with John Mooney also enjoying an economical outing but one couldn’t help but feel the South Africans had put too many runs on the board.

That proved to be the case by some measure, with Irish chase struggling from the outset.

Sensing the need to get quick runs during the powerplay, the Irish openers were aggressive and paid the price, with Porterfield (6), Striling (10) and Niall O’Brien (10) out before ten overs were though.

Morne Morkel was the chief destroyer early, making up for some sloppy work in the field to snapping up the opening pair.

When Johan Botha accounted for Ed Joyce (12) only a Kevin O’Brien masterclass could save Ireland but there were no such heroics at Eden Gardens and the spinners slowly worked their way through the tail before Morne Morkel returned to nip the winning wicket.
