It was written and produced by Harvey Mason, Jr. and Damon Thomas of The Underdogs, and Fuego. "Turn Up the Music" premiered online on January 26, 2012, and was sent to contemporary hit radios in the United States on February 7, 2012.
"Turn Up the Music" is an electronic dance, house and dance-pop song, which consists of house-inspired beats and synthesizers. The inspiration for the song came from Brown's moves on the dance floor.
On February 14, 2012, a remix of "Turn Up the Music" by DJ Pauly D, premiered on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest. After rumors surfaced that Brown would feature on the remix of Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" gained media attention, he tweeted: "Let them be mad!!!! We make music. Don't like it, don't listen! Turn up the music remix is coming soon too! Guess who's on it?", a possible hint that Rihanna would be the featured artist.The official remix, featuring Rihanna, premiered online on February 20, 2012.
