Australia v Pakistan Cricket World Cup Match Report
Chasing 177 to win in Colombo, Shafiq provided the level-headedness required by an often erratic Pakistani line-up, before Akmal played a clever innings to see Pakistan home by four wickets.

Australia had gone 34 matches unbeaten in the tournament since they went down to Pakistan at Headingley 12 years ago, but their weaknesses were exposed by a disciplined Pakistani performance in which they went about their business in an unusually calm manner.

Brett Lee did his best to single-handedly haul Australia into the match with a four-wicket haul, but he was poorly supported as Australia lacked the cutting edge that made them champions in three successive World Cups.

Shahid Afridi bowled Steve Smith.
Although Shafiq lost partners at fairly regular intervals, most notably when Pakistan lost Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to consecutive deliveries to leave them wobbling at 98 for four, he never looked rattled and his influence had a huge effect in what eventually proved a comfortable victory.

Umar Akmal scooped the man-of-the-match award, having come in during that tricky period to launch a counter-attack to which Australia had no response. In an edge-of-your-seat start to his innings he went after the bowling despite his side being in a seemingly precarious position and breezed into the 30s at a run a ball.

His 41-run stand with Shafiq put the game beyond doubt, even when Shafiq was caught at slip by Shane Watson and Afridi was out in his usual fashion - holing out when there was no need for big hitting.

Earlier Australia were bowled out in less than 50 overs in a World Cup match for the first time since 1999 as Pakistan restricted them to 176.

Although the wickets were shared around, it was Abdul Razzaq’s introduction in the 35th over which steered the match in Pakistan’s favour, as he took 2 for 8 in four overs to leave Australia slim on batting as they entered a crucial period of the innings.

Having shown ample respect to Pakistan’s spinners, taking them for just three runs per over on average, Australia needed to keep wickets in hand for a blast in the closing 15 overs if they were to get themselves to a competitive total between 230 and 250 on a tacky Premadasa wicket.

It was an impressive bowling performance from Pakistan after they lost what is often a vital toss here. Umar Gul started proceedings when he bowled Shane Watson in the fourth over to break what has been a crucial opening partnership for Australia.

Although Brad Haddin put on 73 with his captain Ricky Ponting, neither batsman was willing to take the spinners on, and with Pakistan using three of them in the opening 15 overs Australia were never able to inject some impetus into the innings.

Mohammad Hafeez bowled ten overs on the trot and finished with 1 for 26, with Ponting his scalp when the Australian No 3 edged through to Kamran Akmal. Although umpire Marais Erasmus failed to pick it up, Pakistan reviewed the ‘not out’ decision and it was easily overturned by the television umpire.

Haddin was next to go, caught behind off Wahab Riaz, departing for 42 from a massive 80 deliveries - a sign that no Australian batsman truly got in.

Michael Clarke was next highest scorer with 34 from 48 balls before he was bowled by a Razzaq inswinger, and with Michael Hussey falling tamely in the next over to Abdur Rehman, Australia had no recognised batsmen left to power them to a reasonable score.

Steven Smith chipped in with 25, but the innings fizzled out and was brought to a close after 46.4 overs.

Provided India beat the West Indies in Chennai on Sunday, Australia will now face the hosts in Ahmedabad on Thursday while Pakistan travel to Dhaka to face the West Indies.
