Ireland v Netherlands Cricket World Cup Match Report
Having upstaged England earlier in the tournament with a shock three-wicket victory, the Irish couldn’t keep up their triumphant ways with subsequent losses to the West Indies, India and South Africa and failed to qualify for the quarter-finals. Friday’s result, however, saw finish their campaign on a high note, with Stirling’s 101 runs from just 72 balls at the forefront of the six-wicket victory.
Porterfield praised the talented right-hander for the way he bounced back from a torrid run of form, which saw him accrue just 56 runs across five knocks in the limited-overs showpiece across the subcontinent.
“It was a great innings,” Porterfield said. “He hasn’t had the best of runs so far in the tournament and to come out and play the way he did - get a ton in the fashion that he did - shows a lot of character in the lad and I’m happy for him,” enthused Porterfield, who shared in a 177-run stand for the first wicket with the centurion.
Ireland’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired somewhat as Ryan ten Doeschate’s century powered the Dutch to a formidable 306 all out. But Stirling, with half-centuries from Porterfield and Niall O’Brien along for the ride, had very little trouble in knocking off their required target with 14 balls to spare.
“We were slightly disappointed with the way we went up front and threw out with the ball, gave them a lot of scoring options. But in the reply, to play the way we did. Our batting’s let us down a couple of times before, so it was nice to knock off 300-plus,” added Porterfield.
“We’re pretty happy with the fact that where we came from and with all the preparation that we’d done, we’ve gone out there and executed a lot of it.
“We’ve played some good consistent cricket throughout this tournament and that’s what we’re asking for. We’re pretty happy with where we’re at now.”
Defeated skipper Peter Borren, who earlier in the day complemented ten Doeschate’s ton with a quickfire 84, was left to lament a poor display with the ball.
“I thought we made a pretty good comeback from four down for about a 100. And at half-time I thought it was a pretty good score. But on these types of wickets if you don’t get it right with the ball, then you’re going to go for plenty of runs,” rued Borren.
“Young Paul Stirling’s had a bit of a rough tournament. But he’s come out today and he’s given it to us.”
