ICC World Cup 2011, 38th Match, Group A: New Zealand v Sri Lanka Played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumba 18th March 2011 full Highlights Video, Match Report and Scorecard.
New Zealand v Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup Match Report
Sangakkara, with half-centurion Mahela Jayawardene along for the ride, started what Muralitharan finished with four wickets as the Kiwis fell to a mere 153 all out in pursuit of 266 for triumph.
The Black Caps were never in the hunt, with the relatively early departures of Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill for 14 and 13 respectively more than enough to promptly undo their hopes of upstaging the tourney co-hosts.
Jesse Ryder (19), Ross Taylor (33) and James Franklin (20) all failed to convert decent starts, while Kane Williamson and Scott Styris would like to soon forget their single-figure contributions.
Jacob Oram (20 not out) farmed the strike away from the tail-enders for as long as possible, but with a plethora of Muralitharan doosras and varied flight having already done the damage, Ajantha Mendis was left seal the deal with figures of two for 24 and a win with all of 15 overs to spare.
It was an altogether dismal performance from the Kiwis, who fell to their former disjointed ways after impressing at every turn in the limited-overs showpiece thus far.
Earlier the old guard of Sangakkara and Jayawardene afforded their side a solid recovery from the cheap losses of Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga. 145 runs between the veteran duo at close to five an over on a tricky pitch took the wind entirely out of New Zealand’s sails, only for the middle-order’s ineptitude to allow the Kiwis back into the contest.
With Sangakkara and Jayawardene out for 111 and 66 respectively, a 290-plus score was very much on the cards provided the likes of Thilan Samaraweera and Chamara Silva kicked in for the good.
They didn’t, with Angelo Mathews’ cameo 41 not out and a couple of lusty blows down the order from Lasith Malinga and Muralitharan left to take the pseudo hosts to 265 for nine.
The encounter was marred by some shaky umpiring decisions, including third official Amiesh Saheba’s incorrect call in not giving Jayawardene out when Nathan McCullum had clearly held onto a sharp return catch before it hit the deck.
Sri Lanka won’t stay atop Group A for more than 24 hours, with Saturday’s clash of the big guns - Australia versus Pakistan - certain to bring a new leader of the pack.
Sangakkara beat off Muralitharan’s four for 25 to bag the Man of the Match Award for his 128-ball vigil.
