ICC World Cup 2011, England vs Netherlands, 5th Match, Group B Played at Nagpur 22 February 2011 - day/night.
England vs Netherlands ICC World Cup 2011 Match Report
Chasing a daunting 293-run target in the wake of a disastrous fielding effort, which saw them drop four catches, and Dutch star Ryan ten Doeschate's superb ton, the English relied on an unbeaten 55-run stand between Paul Collingwood (30 not out) and Ravi Bopara (30 not out) to see them home with eight balls to spare.
Andrew Strauss' team were cruising for a comfortable win when he and Kevin Pietersen (39) set their pursuit off to a flier with 107 runs at the top of the knock. While newfound opener Pietersen played the anchor role, skipper Strauss cut lose en route to 88 from 83 balls.
Pietersen was eventually, yet again, beaten by a left-arm spinner, Pieter Seelaar. Strauss, later, was undone by a tame Mudassar Bukhari delivery.
At 166 for two before the turn of the 30th over the win was all but there for the taking, with Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell further advancing England's victory charge with 62 and 33 respectively.
The start of the batting Powerplay at the 41st over soon pained rather than pleased England, who promptly had Trott and then Bell back in the hut thanks to a quick brace from all-rounder ten Doeschate.
That left Collingwood and Bopara to dig in for the home straight, with the Netherlands attack unable to keep up the pressure that had earlier set the skids under their big-gun opponents. Boundaries started to leak from both ends, and with neither Seelaar nor ten Doeschate with an over or two in hand, England romped to the third highest successful chase in World Cup history.
Earlier a wonderful century from ten Doeschate set up the prospect of the World Cup's first shock result, which was ultimately a bridge too far for the Associate nation.
Ten Doeschate reached three figures from just 98 balls, with the landmark arriving thanks to four overthrows as England lost their nerve against the side that stunned them in the 2009 World Twenty20.
Although Graeme Swann bowled well on his return to the side, taking two for 35 in his 10 overs, England's fast bowlers were guilty of bowling too straight and too short.
Ten Doeschate cashed in by smashing three sixes and nine fours in a composed innings, and eventually went on to hit 119 from 110 balls in a score of 292 for six.
Opener Wesley Barresi had set the tone for the innings, striking 29 from 25 balls, before Tom Cooper weighed in with 47 as the Netherlands refused to concede the upper hand to England's bowlers.
Strauss' side were guilty of some poor fielding as well, with James Anderson and Pietersen making the costly mistake of leaving a potential catch from ten Doeschate to each other after the Dutchman had skied a Swann delivery.
England's frustration grew in direct proportion to ten Doeschate's total, and by the time he departed - caught in the deep off the bowling of Stuart Broad in the 49th over - they were shambolic.
Peter Borren (35 not out from 24 balls) was spared a dismissal in the same over when he was bowled, only for the umpires to call him back because England had too many players outside the circle.
And Bukhari had a let-off in the final over of the innings as Swann put down a simple catch running in from thirdman.
It gave the small Nagpur crowd plenty to cheer as they showed their support for the minnows and England lost their heads.
