India v England ICC World Cup 2011 Match Report
Before the tournament started this was a fixture that cricket fans would have circled on their schedules - even as their eyes boggled at the length of it - and the match more than lived up to expectations as it brought the tenth edition of the World Cup to life.
There was a magnificent century for each side, with Strauss’ 158 from 145 balls trumping Sachin Tendulkar’s 120 for the man of the match award, and while the majority of the bowling was disappointing, the match’s fate seesawed beautifully until Graeme Swann could manage no more than a single off the final delivery of the game to see England match India’s total of 338.
It was some achievement for England, who had lost the toss and seen India pile on the runs in the opening 45 overs, yet they were left to lament their own meltdown during their batting powerplay, which saw four wickets fall for 27 runs. That appeared to have thrown the game away, but big hitting at the death by Graeme Swann and Ajmal Shahzad saw them escape with an unlikely tie as Munaf Patel’s last over went for 13.
While that powerplay in the England innings was a game changer, India suffered their own collapse at the end of the innings when they lost seven wickets for 33 runs in the last 25 balls of the innings, leaving them all out with a ball to spare. To add to the list of ‘could haves’, Patel failed to ground his bat inside the crease while turning for the second run, which ultimately saw Zaheer Khan run out to end the Indian innings. Such margins were what eventually decided - or failed to decide - a thrilling game.
Tendulkar had played the best innings of the tournament so far, showing all his experience as he started in calm fashion before taking charge to terrorise Swann. However the tag of best innings was quickly passed on when Strauss played the finest one-day knock of his career, one of superb innovation as he worked the ball all around the ground and never allowed India’s spinners to get on top of him.
While Tendulkar was well supported by Virender Sehwag (35), Gautam Gambhir (51), Yuvraj Singh (53) and MS Dhoni (31), Strauss combined with Ian Bell (69) to put on 170 for the third wicket - the highest partnership for England in World Cup history.
The large number of runs told a story the bowlers would rather forget, yet both sides had a pair of them who didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. Brave Tim Bresnan took 5 for 48, halting the Indian charge just when they threatened to truly run riot, while he was backed up well by Shahzad, who stepped in after Stuart Broad was ruled out by illness.
For India, Harbhajan Singh (1 for 58) was the only bowler to concede less than six runs per over but it was Zaheer Khan (3 for 64) who bowled the match-turning spell, taking the key wickets of Bell and Strauss to set up the finale.
In the end none of these fine contributions was enough, but they could all depart in the knowledge that they’d added value to one of the great World Cup matches. Finally the tournament was alive, and while neither side could rejoice at least the average fan had plenty to cheer.
India v England ICC World Cup 2011 Scorecard
Andrew Strauss spoke prior to the match of spoiling India’s party, and for about 50 overs either side of the interval they looked sure to do exactly that. But while the Chinnaswamy crowd were speechless at the end of the match, Strauss’ England were unable to claim celebratory rights as England and India shared in the fourth tied match in World Cup history after a dramatic encounter.
