Pace bowler Lasith Malinga claimed six wickets - including a hat-trick - as Sri Lanka eased to a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Kenya in Group A.

Unfit for his nation’s first two games of the tournament, the pace ace bounced back with a bang to utterly demolish the bulk of the opposition’s middle-order and the tail’s entirety.

Kenya’s choice to bat first after winning the start proved disastrous from the outset, with openers Seren Waters and Maurice Ouma dismissed inside the first three overs of the match.

Brothers David and Collins Obuya provided stubborn resistance at a very dogged rate, each finishing with laboured half-centuries. The duo added 94 runs for the third wicket at a mere 3.18 to the over, draining any semblance of entertainment from the one-sided encounter.

Man of the Match Malinga ended the bore when he castled Collins Obuya for 52, leaving Muttiah Muralitharan and Angelo Mathews to bag a couple of scalps between them through the middle overs.

Right-arm fast bowler Malinga’s final return to the attack again sparked life into an otherwise dour 43.4 overs. He removed Tanmay Mishra lbw for a duck and then undid Peter Ongondo and Shem Ngoche with near unplayable yorkers to claim his hat-trick - the second of this World Cup and the seven in all.

Elijah Otieno had no answer to Malinga’s express pace neither, with his stumps cartwheeled to give the Sri Lankan star his sixth victim and have the Kenyans rolled for 142 all out.

The hosts had no trouble at all in chasing down an altogether modest target.

Tillakaratne Dilshan came out all guns blazing to reach a whirlwind 44 before seamer Elijah Otieno landed some heavy bounce to have the swashbuckling right-hander edge behind.

Upul Tharanga and Kumar Sangakkara were left to the victory charge on the back of an opening stand that fetched 72 runs in just 8.2 overs.

The left-handed opener and captain mercillesly tucked into the hapless Kenyan attack, bringing on a resounding triumph with a massive 188 deliveries to spare. Tharanga finished unbeaten on 67 off just 59 balls, while Sangakkara was content with his cameo of 27 not out.

The big win gives Sri Lanka a large boost on a net run-rate front in a very competitive Group A. Minnows Kenya’s hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals, meanwhile, are all over bar the shouting.
