South Africa v West Indies ICC World Cup 2011 Match Report
Set a modest 223 for victory after dismissing the West Indies in 47.3 overs, the South Africans didn’t get off to the best of starts but de Villiers and captain Graeme Smith and JP Duminy helped the Proteas to a comfortable victory.
While Smith looked sluggish during his innings of 45 from 78 balls, de Villiers was in sublime touch from the first ball he faced. The wicketkeeper-batsman’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking with big shots and excellent running between the wickets meant the Proteas were able to overcome the early loss of Hashim Amla (14) and Jacques Kallis (4) without much fuss.
Amla was out in the fourth over after wicketkeeper Devon Thomas took an excellent catch from an inside edge while Kallis edged one off opening bowler Sulieman Benn to first slip.
The Windies though failed to put the pressure on after the early wickets and de Villiers and Smith steadied South Africa’s wobbly ship with a 119-run stand. Smith’s knock finally came to an end when he was bowled after looking to take a big swipe over midwicket off Kieron Pollard.
That brought JP Duminy (42 not out) to the crease and he kept the Proteas up with the run rate. Not even a brief rainbreak could stop de Villiers from going to his 10th ODI century and lead South Africa to victory in the 43rd over.
While de Villiers carried South Africa with the bat, their spinners did the damage with the ball as they dismissed the West Indies for 222 in 47.3 overs.
South Africa handed a first ODI cap to Imran Tahir as they started the match with three front-line spinners and two fast bowlers in Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.
Tahir claimed for four for 41 and Johan Botha two for 38 as they made sure the Windies’ big guns Chris Gayle, Ramanaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul didn’t have much of an impact. Darren Bravo (73), Dwayne Bravo (40) and Devon Smith (36) offered some resistance.
Darren Bravo and Smith’s 111-run stand kept the Windies in with a shout of a good score, but a middle-order collapse saw them go from 209 for five to 222 all out.
Spinners Tahir and Botha did the damage at the start and in the middle and Dale Steyn wrapped up the innings by claiming the wickets of the big-hitting Kieron Pollard (0), Darren Sammy (0) and Benn (6) at the end.
The Windies will need to come up with some answers ahead of their clash against the Netherlands on Monday. South Africa also face the Netherlands in their next game, but that only takes place on Thursday.
