Kenya v Pakistan ICC World Cup 2011 Match Report

Chasing a mammoth 317 for seven for a very unlikely win, the African side, who last week fell to 69 all out at the hands of New Zealand, at least managed three figures this time around.

Eventually bowled out for 112, the African minnows at one stage looked as though they’d make a contest of it. But that was all over bar the shouting when skipper Afridi introduced his leg-spinners into the attack.

Shahid Afridi's five-for sealed a 205-run win for Pakistan.
While Collins Obuya’s standalone 47 staved off the inevitable for as long as possible, Kenya’s middle order had absolutely no answer to Afridi’s trickery and turn.

From 73 for two, the minnows collapsed to 112 all out, with Afridi racking up his record figures in the space of under nine overs. While Steve Tikolo was his first scalp off the second delivery of 23rd over, Thomas Odoyo’s dismissal brought Afridi his fifth scalp toward the end of the 31s over.

Earlier half-centuries from Younis Khan, Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq rocketed Pakistan to a formidable 317 for seven.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the skids were under Pakistan initially when they fell to 12 for two, with openers Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad back in the hut cheaply.

Kenya’s first-change bowlers couldn’t replicate the efforts of new-ball bowlers Odoyo and Elijah Otieno, though, as Kamran and Younis tucked into a comfortable 98-run stand to get the tournament big guns back on track.

Slow bowlers Shem Ngoche and Tikolo eventually accounted for Kamran (55) and Younis (50) respectively.

That left Misbah and Umar to pick up where the half-centurion duo left off, with the right-handed combination adding 118 for the fifth wicket at less than a run a ball.

Misbah (65), Umar (71) and Afridi perished when the slog was on across the batting Powerplay, leaving Abdul Razzaq and Abdur Rehman to a collective cameo aided by a plethora of closing extras.

Kenya’s attack coughed up a remarkably poor 46 extras, which included 37 wides.

Pakistan now look to a somewhat more testing clash against Sri Lanka on Saturday, while Kenya have close on a week to prepare for another thrashing when they face Kumar Sangakkara’s men.

Kenya v Pakistan ICC World Cup 2011 post-match ceremony

Umar Akmal: I was practicing hard, glad that it has paid off. I thank Allah for a good day. I didn't take any pressure, I considered this to be a normal game. We are training hard and I'm enjoying my fielding.
Umar Akmal is the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
Afridi: We had to be more positive in our batting. The conditions were hard but the batsmen should take chances early on and disturb the rhythm of the bowlers. It was a good start, the next game is very important, we will come harder. Shoaib bowled well, I am more of a bowler and then a batsman.
Kamande: We gave a lot of extras, the guys were trying something extra. Soon after wickets fell, we gave it away by bowling wides and no-balls. Our bowling wasn't good, we looked like four bowlers down. It was good to play Pakistan after a long time, we would want to learn from the mistakes and perform well. The only area of concern in our bowling was the number of extras, we would like to play positive cricket when we take the field the next time around.
Umar Gul: It is a good win. The batsmen did a good job. The middle order strung together good partnerships. I am enjoying my time in SL and it is good that we have started out with a victory.
