ICC World Cup 2011, 28th Match, Group B: Bangladesh v England Played at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong 11th March 2011 (D/N) full Highlights Video, Match Report and Scorecard.
Bangladesh v England ICC World Cup Match Report
Set 226 for victory, Bangladesh slumped to 169 for eight before an unbeaten 58-run stand between Mahmudullah (21) and Shafiul Islam (24) powered them to 227 in 49 overs.
England have now been involved in five thrillers at the World Cup. First they just beat the Netherlands, then they tied with India. That was followed by a loss against Ireland and a thrilling six-run win over South Africa. Their latest defeat means it is likely to be win or bust in their final group match against the West Indies.
England coach Andy Flower will once again be pulling his hair out after his team twice threw away commanding positions. Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes gave the hosts a good start with a 52-run stand but once the former was run out for 38, Bangladesh stuttered to 73 for three with Junaid Siddique and Raqibul Hasan following soon.
Kayes went on to score 60 and his 82-run stand with Shakib Al Hasan (32) put the Tigers back on course.
However, a needless run out saw Bangladesh go from 155 for three to 169 for eight. Kayes, Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim, Naeem Islam and Abdur Razzak all departed for the addition of just 14 runs as Ajmal Shahzad (three for 43), Graeme Swann (two for 42) and Tim Bresnan (one for 35) tightened the screws for England.
As Bangladesh’s hopes of a victory diminished the fans started to stream out of the stadium, but many of them were forced to turn around as Shafiul smashed a couple of boundaries shortly after his arrival
That swung the momentum back in the home team’s favour. England had no response and the Tigers run out victors.
Although the bowlers did well to take England so close to victory, questions will once again be asked about the batsman.
The loss of wickets at regular intervals meant that they restricted to 225 all out after being put in to bat.
A partnership of 109 between Jonathan Trott (67) and Eoin Morgan (63) provided most of the runs on a difficult batting surface as Bangladesh’s spinners strangled England through the middle overs.
England had slumped to 53 for three inside 17 overs as the top order struggled with the low bounce. Andy Flower’s ‘secret’ replacement for Kevin Pietersen at the top of the order turned out to be no surprise at all as Matt Prior opened the innings alongside captain Andrew Strauss.
After a slow start, Prior was out in foolish circumstances, wandering out of his crease while Mushfiqur Rahim appealed for a stumping off Abdur Razzak. Rahim quickly pulled a stump out with ball in hand to ensure that Prior was out at the second time of asking.
Strauss and Ian Bell fell shortly after to leave England in a spot of bother, but Trott batted steadily - as is his fashion - and Morgan looked like he’d never missed a game of cricket as he went about compiling a half-century on his return to the side.
England looked on course for a winning total on a pitch that is expected to get increasingly difficult to bat on, but then Morgan top-edged a sweep shot and was caught at deep square leg.
That sparked a slow but steady collapse as Trott holed out to long-off during the powerplay and Ravi Bopara slapped one straight to cover.
The last seven England wickets fell for 63 runs as Bangladesh’s bowlers took advantage of the slow pitch and were well backed up by their fielders.
